Call to Action! 🍁🍄 Let’s get Winnipeg to sign the Montreal Pledge 🐦🐞

We have some GREAT NEWS to share with you and we’re looking for your support!

A city council motion — supported by OURS-Winnipeg and the Trees Please Winnipeg Coalition — asking that Winnipeg become the 12th Canadian city to sign the Montreal Pledge for Cities United in Action for Biodiversity was introduced on March 23rd to Winnipeg City Council!

That motion, initiated by Councillor Cindy Gilroy (Daniel McIntyre) and seconded by Councillor Brian Mayes (St Vital)  – BIG thanks to them! – was distributed to all city councillors on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2023 and directed to the Water, Waste and Environment standing committee for review.

What you can do to help now:

We’re asking that you show your support for the motion by calling or emailing the Mayor, WWE Committee Members and your own councillor offering your strong support for the motion. Contact info below!

We have a letter of support posted that you can use as a template — it would be great if you took a few minutes to personalize it by expressing your own concerns and the concerns of the group you may be representing. Be sure to include your postal code in the letter.

This is your chance to support and important first step in making Winnipeg a greener, more biodiverse and climate resilient city.

Why it matters:

Biodiversity loss is the third most severe threat humanity will face over the next decade. There has already been a staggering 69% loss in wildlife populations worldwide and vast swaths of habitat have been destroyed, both within city boundaries and beyond.

During recent meetings at COP 15 it was acknowledged that cities are major contributors to biodiversity loss, and signing the Montreal Pledge is an important first step in halting and reversing those losses! You can read the 15 point Montreal Pledge, in full, here.
